2019 Healthy Eating Discovery Summer Camp DPD Program

August 12, 2019

July 29, 2019 to August 2, 2019 the Dietetics Program ran a Healthy Discovery Summer Camp. The camp was started in 2015 by the DPD Director, Dr. Margaret Udahogora, RDN and since then 55 children (8 to 13 years old) have participated in fun and interactive activities to adopt healthy eating habits while learning basic cooking skills, participating in cooking challenges, planning a healthy meal, budgeting, and reviewing basic nutrition and science behind food and health.

The camp promoted a positive attitude about food, food safety, decision making ability in selecting healthy foods from 5 food groups (whole grains, lean protein/plant based protein, fresh/frozen fruits and vegetables, dairy/dairy substitute), decreasing food waste, and physical activity.

Children enjoyed all activities and were proud of their work.  They increased consumption of various fruits and vegetables, they were creative on how to use leftovers and juicing pulps.  The Dietetics Program Alumni visited the campers to promote healthy dietary practices. Ashley Balderson, RDN  and Ashley Lewis, RDN implemented a being brave activity to try new fruits and vegetables, while Patrick Keenan had fun with the kids making a healthy pizza with low fat cheese and vegetables.

Dr.Udahogora would like to gratefully ackonwledge the Dietetics Alumni Lauren Pavone, Ashley Lewis, Ashley Balderson, Komal Shah who previously coordinated the camp activities; the Dietetics students (Sabrina Riordan, Taylor Kasoff, Lauren Incarnato, Deemah Majali, Nur Mohamed Haris, Kateri Rosenberg),  the Engineering: Bioengineering student (Shahed Bader),  Public Health School student (Emma Lawrence) and Nutrition Program (Semira Said) for their creativity in planning the 2019 camp activities. We also do sincerely appreciate all our previous counselors and the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, particularly the Acting Chair, Dr. Sullivan Joseph for the support he provided to all of us.
